The recent, senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, Ahmaud Arbery and other Black Americans – the latest in a long history – and the subsequent public response have brought to light that we all must play a much bigger role in creating a more just society for POC and specifically BIPOC. It is imperative that we do more to support diversity along the lines of race, gender, disability, and socioeconomic status in our field. On Wednesday, June 3 the ATPAM Officers and Board held a special meeting to discuss how ATPAM can become an actively anti-racist organization.
We have decided to begin with these actions:
ATPAM will be appointing a new standing committee for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.
We are also exploring programs that we hope to make available to membership to address Unconscious Bias, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
In addition, at the request of the Hamilton Company Managers and Road Press Agent, VP Daulton and I met with them to discuss the existing Diversity Program on the road (in conjunction with the League) and what steps we can take to do more and do better.
We will share more information about these initiatives as soon as it is available.
I know there are many resources (books, articles, films, etc.) already out there in the world so I’m not going to attempt to replicate that information here.
However, if you haven’t already done so, I strongly encourage all ATPAM members to register for the upcoming Broadway for Black Lives Matter Again forums. While some of the work we need to do has a longer lead time to put in place, this is something that we can do this week and it is also specific to our industry.
