ATPAM Hosts 70th Anniversary Gala Evening

Dancing to the strains of the Joe Traina Quintet, nearly 200 ATPAM members, their families and friends, and representatives from the other theatrical unions celebrated ATPAM’s 70th anniversary at a gala held May 9, 1999 at the Water’s Edge in Long Island City.

Set against the skyline of Manhattan, the breathtaking views added to the excitement and camaraderie of the event. Old friends gathered to catch up on the latest gossip during the cocktail hour. Dinner turned into a table-hopping event while many took to the dance floor (although none can cut the rug quite like Bob Kamlot!) Drawings were held for such door prizes as an ATPAM jacket, dinner at Carmine’s and a facial at Georgette Klinger. Afterwards, with the night air cool and inviting, the party moved out to the balcony where more conversation and drink flowed.

Several members traveled to New York to join the festivities including Steward Tess Collins of San Francisco, Chapter Chair Doug Baker (Los Angeles), Joseph Sutovsky (Pasadena, CA), Stanley Kaminsky (West Hollywood), Steward Mark Schweppe (Philadelphia), and James Preston (Van Nuys, CA). The surprise guest of the evening was Louise Ment, who traveled from the Actors’ Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey to catch up with old friends.

Joining ATPAM in this celebratory evening were International IATSE President Thomas C. Short and his wife Jody, IATSE General Secretary Michael W. Proscia, International Representative Mike Sullivan and members of Locals 764, 798, 751 and United Scenic Artists 829 – the newest Local to become a member of the IATSE family. Also on hand were representatives from Musicians’ Local 802, The Actors’ Fund of America and Irving Cheskin of the League-ATPAM Pension and Welfare Fund.

The evening culminated with a Playbill canvas bag stuffed with goodies, many of which were donated by ATPAM members. Kudos go to the Party Committee (Dick Seader, Howard Rogut, Brian Gaynair, Kevin McAnarney, Suzanne Preuter, Gillian Roth and Nick Kaledin) for an unforgettable evening!
