On Friday, April 19, 2002, ATPAM members gathered in a private dining room at the Waterfront Restaurant on Pier Seven in San Francisco. Spectacular Spring weather encouraged a large turnout. The meeting was an informal luncheon hosted by San Francisco Steward, Tess Collins. Secretary-Treasurer Gordon Forbes introduced Pension and Health Fund Manager Gerry Parnell, who was on hand to meet the members and answer questions from plan participants. The Secretary-Treasurer, who is also a Trustee of the Pension and Welfare Funds, reported on the activities of the Union and recent developments regarding the Pension and Health plans. He also urged the membership to support a proposal to amend the Union's By-laws to establish a "Political Education Committee" (PAC). He explained that without a separate fund from which the Union can make political contributions, any such contributions will be subject to a very steep New York State tax of nearly 50 cents on the dollar. Members expressed concerns about how decisions will be made regarding political contributions. Forbes assured them that the Union's Board will act responsibly and focus contributions on candidates who are sensitive to the needs of workers in the entertainment industry. He encouraged members to use the Union's new web site to communicate with the Board and Officers to express their opinions on this and other subjects. Over coffee and desert members engaged in a roundtable discussion of various issues of concern to the theatre community in the Bay Area. |
