Theatre Development Fund Names
Victoria Bailey as Executive Director
Ms. Bailey, Formerly of the Manhattan Theatre Club,
To Lead One of the Foremost Service Organizations for the Performing Arts
New York, New York - March 13, 2001. The Board of
Trustees of Theatre Development Fund (TDF), one of the country's foremost
not-for-profit service organizations for the performing arts, today named
Victoria Bailey to the post of Executive Director. Ms. Bailey, a
significant player in New York's theatrical community, recently completed
15 years as General Manager at the highly acclaimed Manhattan Theatre Club
(MTC). She will assume her duties at TDF on April 2.
Commenting on Ms. Bailey's selection, John Breglio,
Chairman of the TDF Board, said: "We're are all so pleased to have
Tory in the CEO post at TDF. She has an enormous breadth of experience in
all aspects of the theatrical industry and is respected by a wide network
of colleagues and friends in the business. She also has a passion for
TDF's mission that will ensure that we move forward to build on our roles
of support and service to both the production of plays of merit and to
ensuring access to these productions by the broadest possible audiences. I
have personally had the pleasure of working with her for more than six
years and look forward to this new relationship."
Barry Grove, Executive Producer of the Manhattan
Theatre Club, congratulated TDF on Ms. Bailey's appointment. "Tory
brings to TDF nearly two decades of proven leadership and management
experience at MTC. Further, her general management skills both Off
Broadway and on Broadway and her inherent understanding of what it takes
to market a show or a season should make her an ideal choice to run this
important agency and lead it through its next phase of institutional
growth. We applaud her hiring and wish her and TDF great success."
"I'm thrilled to be joining Theatre Development Fund," said Ms.
Bailey. "Since its inception, TDF has played an invaluable role in
the growth and development of the theatre. In the fulfillment of its
mission of identifying and supporting new works and encouraging and
enabling diverse audiences, TDF has contributed substantially to the
vitality of the theatre. Its role today is more important than ever and as
we move forward, we must build on TDF's past accomplishments, deepening
and strengthening its contribution to the field. I welcome the opportunity
to serve the theatrical community by working with TDF's many constituents
and supporters, its Board and its staff."
In her capacity as General Manager for MTC, Ms. Bailey played major roles
in the production of close to 200 plays, including many commercial
transfers. She oversaw all administrative operations for an $11 million
annual budget and engaged in the very successful strategic planning
process that helped MTC become one of the most successful producing
organizations in the country. Additionally, she has been a member of the
adjunct faculty at Columbia University's School of the Arts for over ten
years, has worked as a consultant for a range of theatres, and is
currently a member of the Executive Board of the League of Off Broadway
Theatres and Producers and a member of the League of American Theatres and
Producers. She is a graduate of Yale College.
Theatre Development Fund (TDF), a not-for-profit
organization, was created in 1968 with the conviction that the live
theatrical arts afford a unique expression of the human condition that
must be sustained and nurtured. TDF's two-fold mission is to identify and
provide support, including financial assistance, to theatrical works of
artistic merit and to encourage and enable diverse audiences to attend
live theatre and dance in all their venues.
TDF has played a unique role in strengthening New York
City's performing arts. It has filled over 55 million theatre seats;
provided subsidy support to over 700 plays, including 19 Tony Award
winners and 23 Pulitzer prize honorees; and returned over one billion
dollars in revenue to thousands of theatre, dance and music organizations.
TDF's ticket programs including the TKTS™ Discount Theatre Centres in
Times Square and at 2 World Trade Center, and TDF's mailing and voucher
programs, touch the lives of millions of New Yorkers and tourists who
might not otherwise be able to enjoy the unique experience of live
performance.
TDF also presents highly regarded sign-interpreted and
open-captioned performances for the deaf, sponsors comprehensive training
courses for future producers, provides a 24-hour New York City arts
hotline and maintains a 75,000 item Costume Collection. TDF's intensive
arts education programs, Stage Doors, Residency Arts Project (RAP) and
Open Doors, and a student theatre newsletter written for and by New York
City high school students, Play by Play, are helping to build tomorrow's
audiences.
